If you’re looking for more than a place to lie your head and rather someplace that will also touch your heart, stay at The Burgess Hotel.

This special place will sweep you off your feet.

If you’re visiting Atlanta, Georgia, be sure to put this 102-room boutique hotel in the Buckhead neighborhood on your must-go list. Even if every guestroom and suite is booked, at the very least you can enjoy a meal at Fia restaurant or sip a handcrafted cocktail at Mr. B Bar.

First opened in 2000 as a Wingate by Wyndham, this hotel earned a reputation as one of Buckhead’s best hotels—which is quite a feat, considering its stunning neighbors. Despite that success, the owners decided to renovate and rebrand, with spectacular, one-of-a-kind results that debuted in December 2019.

The hotel is owned by Freny and Burges Jokhi—a charming couple who actually works at the hotel (rather than do what Monopoly suggests most hotel owners do: peer through monocles counting money). I was greeted at the door by Freny and my dinner was served by Burges. Later, I had a chance to chat with Freny a bit and learned how the couple’s personalities influence the décor: The wallpaper by the elevators was designed by their daughter, a family member snapped the photos by the bar while climbing Mount Everest, the suites’ themes are inspired by a combination of their favorite travel destinations and places they want to visit.

Clearly, the Jokhis have traveled. It shows in the thoughtful details and amenities chosen for the hotel guestrooms—since they’ve stayed at hotels, Freny and Burges know how to anticipate guests’ needs. Guestrooms make the most of space with useful (even inviting!) seating areas in addition to cushy beds, plus are stylish and aesthetically cool with a creative mix of modern and vintage touches, modern light fixtures, and pops of original artwork (including works by their daughter). Standard signs have fun, quirky wording.

For extra space and “wow” décor, stay in one of the seven themed suites: Dragon Suite, China; London Hip Suite, United Kingdom; Arabian Nights Suite, Arabia; Maharaja Suite, India; Casablanca Suite, Morocco; Balinese Suite, Indonesia; and an African Safari-themed penthouse suite.
@21plusTravel Tip: For a South African-themed getaway in Atlanta, book a stay in the Penthouse Suite at The Burgess and dine at nearby 10 Degrees South.

Fia Restaurant and Mr. B Bar

The lobby offers open views to Mr. B Bar and Fia Restaurant, two chef-driven options created by Apicii Hospitality Group for The Burgess Hotel. (According to press materials, Apicii is known for Casa Apicii and Bowery Road in New York City and Breva Restaurant and Hotel Figueroa’s Veranda in Los Angeles.)

Mr. B. Bar specializes in craft cocktails and fine spirits. It is named in honor of Freny’s late father, Keki Bunshah, who organized the first Indian expedition to Mount Everest (photographs from his climbing expeditions hang on a wall near the bar.) In addition to the bar’s ever-evolving cocktail menu, guests may also enjoy Fia’s full menu from this space.

Serving three meals daily, Fia Restaurant offers a Mediterranean-inspired menu featuring wood-fired dishes. Some tables are draped in white tablecloths, others aren’t, so you can choose the vibe that suits your mood.

Fia Restaurant is popular, for good reason, so reservations are recommended. “Usually we serve more locals than hotel guests,” one staff member explained, which is unusual for a hotel restaurant. “It’s not uncommon for every table to be full, but only two are hotel guests. Locals love this restaurant!”

Chef Daniel Porubiansky helms Fia Restaurant and Mr. B. Bar as executive chef, collaborating with hotel co-owner and chef Burges Jokhi to showcase international experiences and techniques on all of the hotel’s signature menus and concepts. Porubiansky brings over 30 years of hospitality experience, including stints with Günter Seeger at The Ritz-Carlton as well as Anne Quatrano and Clifford Harrison at the award-winning Bacchanalia, Star Provisions and Quinones.

As a hotel restaurant, the menu offers a wide range of options in an attempt to reach a broad range of palates. Every dish I sampled was impeccable, from the butternut squash soup to the handmade fettucine to the wood-fired pork chop. But it was when Jokhi delivered my dessert pick to the table—a crème caramel—that he said, “This is my favorite dessert! I try not to eat one every day!” One bite confirms it’s potentially addictive…as is The Burgess Hotel.
